Did you know Friday is World Health Day? This is a day when everyone tries to pay a little extra attention to their health.
When people talk about health, they usually think about things like eating healthy things like fruits and vegetables. Or they think about doing healthy things like riding bikes and playing outside.
But there is another kind of health that a lot of people don’t think about and it’s just as important. It’s your inside health, how you feel inside. For some people, this can be very difficult. They feel sad inside all the time, even when they don’t think there’s much reason to feel so sad. When it’s really bad, it is called depression and it can make people stop doing things they used to love, like going shopping with their friends or listening to happy music.
Sometimes people need help to deal with their depression. Friends can be a lot of help because they help you get out of the house and go do things. Doctors can be a lot of help because they can listen to problems and help find new ways to solve them. Even exercise and eating healthy can help because you are giving your body the things it needs to grow strong and healthy.
If you are ever feeling very sad and the sad doesn’t seem to be going away on its own, you should tell someone how bad you’re feeling. Keep telling people you trust until you find someone who is willing to talk with you about it and find ways to help you get happy again.
To help, here’s a story I found about a lonely elephant who didn’t know it was his own fear that was keeping him from making new friends. The person who wrote the story is 8 years old. I hope you enjoy it.
